Armstrong: I'll Be Back - 19/06/08

By Ky Capel - Dorset Echo

Wounded Wildcat Jon Armstrong is still hopeful of racing for Weymouth this season despite breaking his leg almost three weeks ago. The Mighty Midget suffered the injury after a collision with team-mate Jay Herne and Sittingbourne Cruasders' Jerran Hart during the Conference League Pairs. Armstrong, now out of hospital, has been left distraught by the accident but hopeful of a return before the season ends.

He said: "The doctors are looking at three months or so before I'm back, so it could be a long haul. However, I'm hoping to get some meetings in before the end of the season, I'm just so disappointed that it's happened so early on in the season. I'm not going to be in the window much for this season but I want to make sure I put myself in the window for next year. I know Jay quite well and what happened is no one's fault. If I had been in a different position going round the corner things might have been different, I just couldn't see Jay through Jerran Hart. I wanted to get back up for the re-run, but the minute I put weight on my leg I knew I couldn't do anything."

The Wildcats' number one rider was also the club's top points scorer with 91 paid three in eight meetings this year. But Armstrong is confident in the ability of Jay's brother Lee Herne as he prepares to fill the void against Plymouth in a Knockout Cup double header starting tomorrow night. Armstrong added: "I rode with Lee a few years ago in the Premier League. Like anyone else new he struggled at times but back then there was a lot of potential in him and I think he will do a fantastic job for the team. Some people are a bit worried but I don't see any problems with Lee."

Armstrong was a spectator for Weymouth's Challenge success against the Bristol Bulldogs nearly a fortnight ago, and is keen to visit the Wessex Stadium as often as he can. He said: "I'm hoping to be down this weekend, I'm not going to disappear. I like it down at Weymouth. The fans are good and made a collection for me in which they raised a lot of money in such a short space of time, I've made a lot of friends at the club."
