Former Weymouth Wildcats' racer Chris
Johnson will not need another operation,
after doctors gave him the green light
to put weight on his shattered left
leg. Johnson suffered a broken kneecap,
severely broken thigh, broken pelvis
and severe blood loss in a major smash
at King's Lynn last October. And the
21-year-old travelled to Oxford's John
Radcliffe Hospital expecting to be told
he would need another operation to secure
the fibia graft, which is supporting
his thigh. But while specialists refused
to rule out future surgery, Johnson
was unexpectedly given the go-ahead
to step up his recovery. The Isle of
Wight man is now ready to take his recuperation
to the next level and rebuild the wasted
muscles in his leg.
He said: "I saw the specialist and they
don't want to operate due to the risk
of it getting infected again. Also,
the fibia bone is growing really well
and there is lots of bone forming around
it. It's unexpected from my point of
view because I was expecting to go in
and have an operation. But I came out
with no operation and I can now put
50 per cent of my body weight on that
leg. So far, I've only been building
up my quads but now they're telling
me I can do all the exercises I need
to build the muscles up. They told me
to start walking on it; in order to
try and stimulate bone growth and this
has really improved my movement."
