On a wet and dismal June night at the Wessex stadium the Wildcats, with new number one Lee Herne, dug deep and after a rain disrupted meeting managed to clinch a two point victory to take down to the St Boniface Area for the second leg. With the final score ending up at 47-45 it could have been so much better for the hosts having been twelve points up at heat ten but with a tactical working for the Devils in Heat Eleven and back to back 5-1’s in the last two heats the Wildcats advantage was almost washed away.
Kyle Newman was a man on a mission for the hosts after claiming four straight wins in his programmed rides, a first for the young Wildcat reserve he took a reserve ride in the penultimate race to replace the battered Tim Webster who had already had two falls in his previous rides. It wasn’t to be five in a row for Kyle though as he clipped the back of Paul Starke going into turn three for the first time and took a heavy fall that ended his dreams of a fifteen point maximum.

After flying in from Australia on Wednesday on what was originally planned to be a holiday Lee Herne made his return to British speedway after a three year absence. It wasn’t a good start though, having had no time to practise, lining up on unfamiliar machinery Lee had a bit too close an encounter with the tapes in his first ride. Things looked up after that though with very impressive back to back wins that hinted at things to come from the elder of the two Hernes.

The old statesmen of conference league Stephens and Simmonds were piling in the points for the Devils with Stephens taking a critical tactical ride in heat eleven for the visitors that marked a turning point in the meeting that saw the hosts gain just one heat advantage in the remaining heats.
The postponed Plymouth leg of this meeting will take place on the 4th July 2008.
